What made you choose to join the AberGays Society?

I joined the AberGays society as I wanted to get involved within my community and meet other LGBT+ students.

How does the AberGays Society create a safe and inclusive space for its members?

We make sure that each new member is made to feel welcome. At our in-person events, we provide name badges so that people can write their name and pronouns so that they don’t get misgendered. Additionally, when there are issues such as misgendering they are dealt with so that people feel safe and comfortable.

Can you share a recent event or initiative organised by the AberGays Society that you found particularly impactful or empowering? What were the goals and outcomes of that event?

The society arranged a Vigil after the Death of Brianna Ghey, to show our respects and to show our support for the community. They arranged for candles to be lit and we had speakers stand up and talk about the impact of her death. It was very impactful and important that they held this.

Can you share a personal story of empowerment or growth that you attribute to your involvement in the AberGays Society?

Being able to meet with other students within the LGBT+ community has really helped me become more comfortable with myself, I’ve gained the confidence to put myself out there and as a result, I was voted in to be president of the society

If you could have a conversation with a famous LGBT+ activist, living or deceased, who would it be and what would you talk about?

I’d speak with Gilbert Baker and ask him what it was like to design the pride flag.

Looking to the upcoming academic year, what are the goals and aspirations of the AberGays society? Are there any specific campaigns, initiatives or policy changes that the society aims to pursue?

We hope to undertake more fundraising this year, such as through creating society merchandise and doing fundraising walks. We want to provide more opportunities to get our members more involved in the local LGBT community and want to undertake more outings. We hope to do outings to Edinburgh or Glasgow pride this year as well as Dundee pride
